The Coast Guard Manned - USS Serpens AK 97 Commemorative Website
This website has been created to honor the men that served on the USS SERPENS AK 97 and all veterans that served during World War II.
My Grandfather, William Cleveland Carber was a United States Coast Guard Officer that transferred off the Serpens six days before the ship exploded and sank.
My Grandfather eventually retired from the Coast Guard a Lt. Commander and passed away when I was young, never fully recovering from the loss of his shipmates.
This website was started from an Internet search producing one known picture in the Naval Archives and the chance encounter by rummaging through a massive pile of unmarked photographs several years ago with a little “97” on the bow of a unmarked ship.
This site has continued to evolve and grow, with the help and patience of several family members and friends of the men who served aboard this ship. Please forward any and all questions to Michael on the Contact Page.
